MTV Video Music Awards, otherwise known as the VMAs, are typically held in either New York City or Las Angeles. This year, they were hosted in the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. Though intended to take place Sept. 10, the event was pushed back a day to avoid any conflict with the presidential debate going on.
Every year, various artists are nominated and voted upon for several categories. Just a few categories are Best New Artist, Video, Song of the Summer, Album, Group, etc. This year, many well-known artists were selected as winners of those categories. Some of those nominees/winners are Chappell Roan, Lenny Kravitz, Megan Thee Stallion, and previous VMA winner Taylor Swift.
One of the most notable performances this year was Chappell Roan. She was awarded the title “Best New Artist.” It was her first year attending, and Roan made many headlines this last week. Not only did her performance strike much controversy, but the red-carpet interviews afterward did as well. Inspired by Saint Joan of Arc, Roan performed in a set of armor, surrounded by dancing soldiers. During the photo shoot, videos caught paparazzi yelling at Roan who quickly yelled back.
Junior Sophia Miller shared, “I thought it was well done and exciting to watch.” She then mentioned, “I think she sang well, especially for her first performance like that.” For her last statement, Miller exclaimed, “She ate.”
Another popular artist who performed at the VMAs this year was Benson Boone. Over this year, Boone has gained much attraction. While also being nominated for New Artist, Boone instead won the award titled, “Best Alternative.”
Third-year student Gracie Lombard mentioned, “I’m happy he won an award. I love it when he does his little flips on stage.”
