As the holiday season rolls into St. Louis High School, one tiny visitor has been making a big impact in the band room. The band’s Elf on the Shelf, known as Elffish, has become a daily source of excitement, laughter, and Christmas spirit for band students. Each morning, students walk in eager to see what kind of mischief the elf got into overnight, making rehearsals even more festive during the busiest time of the year.
Senior Jacob Erskin says, “The elf has been a highlight of the band for years.” His favorite memory was when the elf toilet-papered the drum set, catching everyone in surprise. “It makes me feel happy,” Erskin said. According to him, Elffish has been showing up for three years, becoming a tradition students look forward to every December. The elf’s antics help keep spirits high as the band pushes through winter rehearsals.
Another senior, Harley Mader, appreciates how creative the elf can be. His favorite moment was when the elf turned Mr. Potato Head into potato chips, which quickly became a favorite story among band members. “I think it’s a cool festive thing for the holidays,” Mader said. He also believes the elf helps bring everyone together, adding that it gets students involved and excited to see “what he could do next.”
Senior Trinity Bergey agrees that the elf adds humor and joy to the mornings. Her most memorable moment was when the elf “killed” Ken, creating laughs throughout the band room. “It makes me feel silly,” Bergey said. She explained that the elf puts everyone in a good mood to start the day and gives students something to laugh about later, even after rehearsals are over.
Overall, the band’s Elf on the Shelf has become more than just a decoration. It’s a holiday tradition that brings smiles, laughter, and Christmas cheer to students every day. As finals approach and winter break gets closer, Elffish continues to remind everyone that even during stressful times, a little holiday fun can go a long way.
