Here at Saint Louis, the students are given the opportunity to take a woodshop class led by Mr. Maxwell. The class teaches students the basics to wood working, and allows students to get hands-on experience with this type of work. Not only is this class an amazing way to teach students a new skill, it also teaches them how to honor and serve others while doing so.
What better opportunity to serve our community than Veterans day? Every year since 2021, Mr. Maxwell and his students have taken it upon themselves to build something special for the local veterans. The shop has been building many different types of plaques, and handing them out for free on Veterans day.
This year, Maxwell decided to go above and beyond, taking a whole new approach to the plaques. He stated, “This year the process was a bit more stressful because of the complexity of the design. The flags for the first time had the red, white and blue color to them. They were so unique and brought a lot of attention and demand.” Though they managed to pull it off, it is clear that the new design was liked by many, and put a bit more pressure on the woodshop.
The woodshop classes worked very hard to make sure they could complete a good amount of plaques and were right to do so with this year being one of the best turnouts. Senior Ben Godfrey stated, “The project, overall, went really well and it was an honor doing it. I know my dad was very appreciative.”
It is clear that the students worked very hard this year to please the veterans, and serve them the correct way. Maxwell stated, “Our drive is to teach the younger generation the value of honoring others.” It is exciting to see and hear about all the success the shop has had doing these large and demanding projects, because they give veterans in the community something to really look forward to every year.
