Every year in November, Saint Louis High School hosts the Arms Service Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, test for students. This year the test will be hosted Nov. 13, 2025.
The ASVAB is a standardized test that measures a person’s abilities and aptitudes to help determine eligibility for enlistment in the U.S. military. It evaluates skills in areas like verbal, math, and technical aptitude, and scores are used to match recruits with a suitable military career path.
Additionally, for students, the ASVAB can serve as a tool for career exploration to understand skills and post-secondary options, like college or trade schools. The ASVAB consists of nine sections of different topics including: general science, arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, mathematics knowledge, electronics information, auto and shop information, mechanical comprehension, and assembling objects.
Senior Alex Rodriguez is taking the test for the second time and said, “I can find career paths that I like by taking the ASVAB. I took it last year and thought it was pretty easy for the most part. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I recommend everyone to take it as our school does it for free.”
Whether students plan on going into the military, going to college, or even just relaxing after high school, the ASVAB can help give them some sort of direction for a future career. Marcellus Guerrero, who is a senior at SLHS said, “taking the ASVAB allows me to have other options for my future. It is always good to have a backup career in mind.” The ASVAB has been a yearly tradition at SLHS allowing students to explore other career paths. Students can sign up to take the ASVAB in the office or email Mrs. Sura at [email protected].
