The St. Louis Girls’ varsity basketball team played in the district finals Friday, March 7, against Hemlock. They played a tough game keeping up in the first half, but unfortunately fell short in the second half by the final score of 50-35, ending their basketball season.
Senior Brynn Saxton stated, “The game went decent on Friday, staying within reach of Hemlock the whole game. As a team, I believe we each could have fixed something to make the game go better. I personally think I did okay. I didn’t play my best that night and struggled on the defensive side of things.” Saxton also added, “It’s sad to know that my seasons are over for basketball. Knowing I won’t play basketball again is sad to think of because I’ve been playing since I was in fifth grade.”
Another player, sophomore Courtney VanAlstine commented, “I think the game went okay on Friday. I think that the team was very tired and played really well despite being that tired. We did the best we could do. Hemlock was a tough team with them being number one in the state last year.” VanAlstine then said, “As much as I loved playing basketball I am excited for a break. It will be interesting to see what next season brings for us since we just lost three great seniors.”
Also, sophomore Paige Luneack said, “I think the game went well. There were a lot of turnovers that could’ve been prevented, but overall the team did well with communicating. I think I could’ve done better with not giving up the ball so much and just taking the ball to the basket.” She then added, “I’m excited for softball to start, but I will miss this team because I feel most of us were close. It was always a good laugh to be around this team.”
Another senior, Zoey Clarke stated, “I thought we honestly could have beat Hemlock if we would have been able to break their press and stay off the sidelines. My team is a very capable team, we just weren’t playing very well that day. I thought we definitely could have played better that game, but overall I was still proud of how everyone did, not just that game, but in every game in the season.” Clarke then added, “As for me as an individual, there were definitely some things I should have done differently, but I can’t change the past so, I’m proud of myself no matter what. I know I gave it my all at the end of the day no matter the outcome. Although I am glad to have some free time again. I am really going to miss basketball because it is now officially the end of my career in high school sports. I will forever be grateful for basketball.”
Overall, it is clear that the girls are sad that this basketball season has come to an end, but excited to see what next season brings for them. It’s obvious these awesome seniors will be missed on the team.
