Nosferatu is a classic vampire movie from the early 1900’s but recently had faded into obscurity until director Robert Egger revived it in a 2024 remake of the original film. On Christmas day 2024 we were delivered an objective masterpiece, although the movie may not be for everyone, certain aspects of the film were just undeniably spectacular.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s the original silent film almost completely disappeared when the last known copy of the movie was missing, and the general public had completely forgotten about its existence until the popular TV series Spongebob Squarepants made many references to the film sparking interest in the movie again after decades.
The plot takes place in the 1830s as estate agent Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter’s new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding. Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that’s far beyond her control.
Nosferatu, as a gothic movie, delivered some of the best acting performances and horror scenes of 2024. In a year full of horror movies like Night Swim, it was very refreshing to be able to watch the remake as it restored faith in the horror genre. Students who watched the movie were quoted saying the movie was, “Peak Cinema” and that they couldn’t wait to see what else Egger makes in the future! Senior Elliot Carter stated, “Nosferatu is a stunning cinematic delivery into a Gothic story of pure splendor that is a visual delight for the eyes in every possible way.”
Nosforatu is an amazing movie and a great look into more niche horror, although the movie may not be for everyone, certain aspects of the film were just undeniably spectacular. The movie was a stunning addition to Eggers collection of niche horror movies and other films.
