The St. Louis High School National Honor Society hosted another blood drive May 1, 2025 in the gymnasium.
The NHS at SLHS hosts multiple blood drives every year, and this one was no different than the others. Partnering with Versiti, students, staff, and members of the community were able to donate blood at the event. Upon donation, those who gave blood were given Versiti baseball hats as a token of their generosity.
When doing a whole blood donation, a pint of blood is taken from the donor. This pint of blood can save up to three lives! A donor can donate blood every two months, and SLHS hosts three blood drives a year, making it possible for anyone who desires to donate blood multiple times per year.
While giving blood may seem scary at first, facing a fear of needles to do a good deed is very common at blood drives. For example, two-time blood donor Sophia Miller was apprehensive at first about giving blood, but faced her fears for the greater good, and even decided to donate again this spring. “Both my previous and recent blood donation experiences have been pretty positive. Ultimately, it’s nice to know that when you do something good, the outcome will be positive.” She later added, “I am a bit scared of needles but have always been fine in the end.”
Giving blood is very beneficial, and many donors seen at the blood drive have been donating blood for a while. Mrs. Biehl is an example of a frequent blood donor and encourages everyone that is able to donate blood. “I have always thought it was important to donate, but then a few years ago my daughter needed a blood transfusion, and I realized even more how important it is to do what we can to help.” She concluded by saying, “Don’t let nerves stop you from trying to donate! You will feel great after knowing you helped people.”
The National Honor Society will continue to host blood drives for anyone interested in donating.
