The St. Louis boys’ baseball team took on Grayling at home Friday, April 4, for the first doubleheader matchup of the season.
Ultimately, the Sharks fell to Grayling in both matchups, with both losses being close games. The first game ended with a final score of 6-7 after the Sharks almost completed the sixth inning comeback. The team scored five of their last six total runs in the sixth inning but ended up falling short. As for the second game, the team lost 6-2.
In the close first-game matchup, Marcus Hoyt finished the game scoring one run and had one run batted in. Easton Seleski and Carson Zacharko also scored one run and had one RBI as well. Justin Rodriguez, Bentley Inbody, and Parker Wonch all came in with one run by the end of the game. Additionally, Ryder Siefka was able to bat in two of the team’s scored runs. For the second game, the two scorers were Seleski and Inbody.
Rodriguez recognized what the team needs to work on. He stated, “Overall, as a team, we most definitely could improve. Errors set us back in some areas, and we just didn’t have the timely base hit when needed. Individually, I felt like I did pretty good back at the leadoff spot, setting the tone for the start of the game. Every game will help us move towards a district win if we decide to adapt.”
Inbody thought the first couple of games could have gone worse, but there was still room for improvement. He said, “I think we did pretty good. We had a couple of mistakes in the field, one being a balk from the pitcher. A takeaway is we can’t let the game go once teams score a couple of runs on us.”
All in all, the boys who were on the team from last year know what to work on despite these tough losses. The Sharks will be back on the field Wednesday, April 9, at Valley Lutheran High School.
