The St. Louis varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams recently kicked off their seasons with their first TVC matchups at Millington High School Aug. 30. Unfortunately, both teams were unable to defeat their opponents.
According to assistant varsity volleyball coach Mrs. Godwin, “Our biggest struggle was running an offense. Our serve receive and passing was on point, though. Energy goes a long way when playing volleyball. I encourage the team to cheer and have fun, but pulling it together to focus and play the game is also an important skill.”
Sophomore Olivia Coffin said, “Each game, each tournament, and each quad, we always learn something even if we lose. We also use it to our advantage. I think we are capable of a lot more and I think it’s going to soon show.”
Prior to the Varsity game, the JV team competed in their first game. Even though they lost, they used it as a learning experience. In fact, freshman JV player Kylee Riley said, “Communication is key. If you don’t communicate with your team, the entire team goes down with you. If you’re not communicating or you’re getting down on yourself all the time, then the rest of the team is going to be down too.”
Freshman JV player Emma Seleski said, “Our biggest struggle was serve receive. We also need to stay focused all the time and keep our heads and energy up.”
The varsity volleyball team has competed in two tournaments so far, and the JV team has competed in one. The varsity team worked hard and were silver bracket champions in one of their tournaments so far this year. Unfortunately, the JV team came up short against their opponents at their first tournament of the season.
The Lady Sharks will be back in action against Nouvel Catholic Central Thursday, Sep. 7.
