It’s almost impossible to miss the giant numbered countdown in the senior hallway at St. Louis High School. Some might wonder, “What is this for?” The answer to that question is simple: it’s the amount of school days remaining before seniors skip town!
The countdown, started by senior Dominick Girard, is just shy of a month from its final date. Seniors have been able to observe the change in days every day, and some are happy about it.
“You have no idea how happy I am to watch the dates go down on that calendar,” exclaimed senior Olivia Good. Good continued, saying, “I am ready. I’ve obviously had a lot of great memories here at SLHS, but when it comes down to it I am ready to move out into the world, away from my hometown, and really get away from high school.”
Girard, the creator of the calendar himself, is ecstatic to watch the days go by. “I’m happy to be able to see those days count down.” He continued with, “I think I put some fun ones in there, so I’m excited to see those.”
Many seniors feel a mix of both emotions, like Myah Pitcher. Pitcher stated, “It’s a mix of being both excited and nervous, I think. I’m ready to get out, but then that means I actually have to grow up.” Like many seniors, Pitcher will be most sad to leave behind her friends and not see them every day.
Girard also agrees. Socializing with friends daily is an important part of high school, which the senior will miss. “Not engaging with people on a daily basis is the worst part of summer, because you can’t do that. That will probably be the worst part of graduating,” he added.
Despite being excited to graduate, seniors are obviously going to miss a lot about high school. “Any memory that has to do with band is one I’m going to miss,” Good stated. “Band has been a huge part of my life throughout high school, and it’s given me a purpose and a reason to show up.”
