Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

The game Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga released April 5, 2022 as the part sequel and part re-imagining of Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga, of 2007.

While The Complete Saga detailed the adventures of just the first six episodes of the Star Wars films, The Skywalker Saga includes all nine films as of 2022. Adding The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker to the originals’ The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. TCS features six parts for the six movies it includes. Meanwhile, TSS features only five parts for each of its nine movies. According to Cole Lombard, “The choice to remove a singular level from each movie was unfortunate but I guess it was necessary for them to get the game done in time.”

The game features a collection of a whopping 22 planets from the films to explore, from the Galactic Republic’s capital of Coruscant, to Luke and Anakin’s home planet of Tatooine. Each planet has its’ own space and surface to explore, complete with unlockable characters, vehicles, and items. Speaking of characters, the base game features no less than 386 playable characters. This excludes the current seven downloadable character packs available at the moment, each expanding on the universe with their own additional characters. The universe is complete with 1,166 collectibles obtained either by exploring the open world or via the game’s 140 side missions. These side missions aren’t simple one-step issues either, they involve talking to multiple characters and doing multiple different things across the 22 worlds.

The game, of course, follows the same plot of the nine films. Beginning with Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi discovering the main character of the entire saga, Anakin Skywalker. Anakin is the prophesied “Chosen One”, as he has the most powerful force potential of any being to have ever lived. He has no father, he was born of a virgin birth to Shmi Skywalker, a not very subtle Jesus comparison. After Qui-Gon gets killed by Darth Maul, the first Sith to have appeared in well over 1000 years, the Jedi have to honor Jinn’s dying wish of training Anakin as the Chosen One. After Anakin falls in love with a girl who’s five years older than him, he decides to kill almost every Jedi and turn into Darth Vader. His former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, takes Anakin’s son, Luke, to Tatooine to grow up with Anakin’s brother. According to Grant Bebow, “Star Wars is the best cinematic story of all time. And the lego version is even better than the live action version.”

Later, Obi-Wan gets himself killed in front of Luke to turn him into a Jedi. Luke confronts Vader after getting trained by Master Yoda and finds out Vader is his father. Luke then confronts his father and his father’s master, Palpatine. Luke, of course, comes out on top and turns his father back to the light side, killing Palpatine and causing Vader to sacrifice himself. Episodes 7-9 follow the granddaughter of Palpatine and her journey to becoming the last Jedi. Her and the grandson of Vader fall in love with each other and defeat Palpatine. The game presents all of this, in a humorous way compared to the original movies’ dramatic presentation. The game isn’t just fun, its a modern masterpiece, spawned form arguable the best film series ever, and the best toy series ever.
