The St. Louis varsity basketball team competed against the Nouvel Central Catholic Panthers, Saturday, Feb. 12. The team put up a good fight but fell short by a score of 67-54.

The Sharks had two straight games in a row, so the team had to compete even harder after starter Ignatious Jackson fell injured the week prior. Jackson has been their leading scorer all season and one of the best defenders on the team. They fell to the Carrollton Cavaliers on Friday, Feb. 11.

On Saturday, Nouvel swept the game but the Sharks held their own, not being down by too many points at the end of the first half. The Panthers stayed on the top for most of the game and closed out the sharks in the final quarter. Although the boys didn’t pick up any wins from the weekend, the stats showed that the Sharks were filling the spots they needed too. Thomas Zacharko led the team with an impressive 25 points and six assists. Michael Baysah finished with 16 points adding an impressive 16 rebounds and six blocks.

“Legs were dead, but we fought hard. For the second straight night, Thomas (Zacharko) and Michael (Baysah) really picked up the slack without Iggy Jackson in the lineup,” said Coach Nic Gibbons via St. Louis Sentinel. Zacharko and Baysah have been averaging around 20 for the last three games.

“When Iggy got hurt, the team knew we had to step it up a little cause we were losing a big starter for our team. Especially for the other starters, we really had to fill in shoes and play harder than we usually had before. We’ve had to come together as a team more and hopefully keep getting better moving forward in future games”  said Baysah.

The Sharks next compete Friday, Feb. 18 as they host Hemlock for Senior night.
