The St. Louis varsity football team fell to the Hemlock Huskies Friday, Sept. 17,  by the final score of 41-12.

This loss ended the Shark’s three-game win streak, and they now stand 3-1 and 1-1 in conference play.

The Sharks didn’t have too much of a bad start to the game as they ended the half down only 0-7 with a lot of game to go.

Yet, Hemlock came alive in the second half scoring 28 unanswered points.

Senior Rafael Orta-Vazquez stated, I guess the reason we lost was that we underestimated the Hemlock team. We were playing way too scared at points of the game and that cost us a lot. We just took them too lightly, and they came out punching.”

Senior Gavin Wenzlick got hurt in the middle of the game so he didn’t get to see how the rest of the game played out, but he does have some thoughts of his own about how the team played.

He stated, “In the beginning of the game I thought we were playing well. Obviously we weren’t winning but there was a chance we could still outscore them. One of the things that cost us the game, in my opinion, was our mental blockage. Hemlock had a big physical team who knew how to win. It’s important to be confident in your teammates and the team itself, but I think it is also important for us to be realistic in the teams we will face in the future.”

Some highlights of the game were when quarterback Reece Giles hit Ben Dousuah with a 62-yard TD pass to get St. Louis a score late in the second half. Then running back Ignatius Jackson passed the ball to Wisdom Zanquo as he went on to complete an 80-yard score.

The Sharks compete again Friday, Sept. 25, against the Valley Lutheran Chargers in Saginaw.
