SLHS students last dissection of the year!

Recently in St. Louis High School, Mrs. Dubridge’s biology classes have been dissecting fertile baby pigs. Sadly, this was the last dissection of the year! The first class to start the dissection May 17, was the Honors biology class. Then the other classes followed the next day. Students were full of disgust with the smell of dissection yet filled with amusement as they walked in the room to begin.

Sophomore Dylan Luft expressed, “I was excited because while I was quarantined I unfortunately missed a couple of dissections, so I was really looking forward to dissecting the pigs.” Luft’s favorite part about dissecting was opening the abdomen to be able to see all the organs inside. His least favorite part was the smell from the liquid because it was so strong and even with a mask the smell was horrid. Luft’s favorite dissection of this year was the frog, but dissecting the pig is a close second. For Luft, the hardest part of dissecting was making sure not to cut too deep and cut anything he wasn’t supposed to.

McKenzie Reid stated, “My favorite thing about dissecting is cutting open the animal to see how everything looks. It’s so interesting to see the different sizes of organs compared to other animals.” Reid’s favorite dissection was also the frog, but she also had a lot of fun when it came to dissecting the pig. Reid believes that the hardest thing about the dissection was following the directions.

Kiersten Wenzlick who very much enjoyed dissecting, stated, “My favorite part of dissecting was pulling apart the intestines to see how long they were. In total, the intestines were measured to be about 85 inches.” Her favorite dissection of the year was the pig. However, the hardest part of dissecting was finding where all the organs were located.
