The Hunger Games has left a lasting impression
September 16, 2020
The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel created by American writer Suzanne Collins. It
was published on Sept. 14, 2008, and had 200,000 copies sold by February of 2010. This
book has won many awards and was named one of Publishers Weekly’s “Best book of the
year” during 2008. Collins then published two more novels in the series, Catching Fire and
Mocking Jay.
Collins mentioned that her inspiration for Hunger Games came from channel surfing on
television. She observed two channels, one of which was people competing on a reality TV
show, and the other was footage of an invasion of Iraq. She said the two began to “blur in an
unsettling way,” and then the idea for the Hunger Games was created.
Hunger Games is told from the point of view of a 16-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen, and
she lives in the post-apocalyptic future of the nation Panem, North America. The Capitol is a
highly advanced metropolis that has all political control over the nation. The hunger games is an
an annual event, where one boy and girl between the ages of 12-18 from 12 districts are selected to
compete in a battle to the death, which is televised for people to watch. During the lottery,
Everdeen volunteers in place of her 12-year-old sister Primrose.
Hunger games is one of my favorite books, and it would be a nice book for others who like the
adventurous, science fiction genre. After a few of the chapters of Hunger Games, I instantly fell
in love with it, and I’ve also gone ahead and read the two continuous novels. Hunger Games is
something that I’ve enjoyed reading, and nothing could compare to it. The movies are also great,
and they made me love this series even more.
