The Varsity Wrestling took home their fourth consecutive District Title Monday, Feb. 11, in their home gym.

“The atmosphere in the gym was amazing. I’m very thankful for the opportunity that we got to not only compete for a district title, but win it as well. This is the seniors fourth district title and it’s very exciting that we achieved our goal of winning it, said Ryan Downs.

The night began with the Sharks beating the Beaverton Beavers 49-30 in the district semi- finals. Picking up wins during this dual was Modestie Hitchcock, Alexander Newton, Craig Bebow, Tristin Baker, Gavin Giles, Robert Russell, Eli Abbott, Downs, and Isaac Howd.

The Sharks then faced a tough Montabella squad in the finals. This was one of their most exciting and close matches of the year. With the score going back and forth, the team had to step up to seal the deal. Toward the end, the score was still very tight. However, the second to last match was the heavyweight match, and St. Louis’ heavyweight Luke Maxwell pinned his opponent to secure the fourth consecutive district championship.

According to Maxwell, “Going into the match there was a bit of pressure. The energy in the gym was very exciting, and it really made the day even more special to have so many fans involved.”

Additionally, the team competed in individual Districts to continue on with their post-season. The tournament was held in Mayville and six wrestlers placed and qualified for the regional competition. Newton, Bebow, Giles, Russell, Downs, and Howd all qualified.

The following week, the boys competed in New Lothrop at the individual regionals tournament. After an exciting day, Newton, Downs, and Howd all qualified for the MHSAA Wrestling State Finals which is held at Ford Field. This tournament will take place March 1, and 2.
