Snow days in Michigan aren’t uncommon, and the students at St. Louis High School have a fair share of snow days throughout the year. The student body was elated to find out that on Wednesday, Jan. 10, school was canceled for everyone. With a free day to kill and lots of winter activities freshly available, students and teachers of all types enjoyed their snow days.
Senior Kylie Acker is one of those students who thoroughly enjoys snow days. She stated, “Snow days are the best time to lay on the couch, grab some hot chocolate, and watch a movie. It doesn’t get much better than that.” Acker also encourages all students to engage in snow day superstitions like turning their pajamas inside out and flushing ice cubes down the toilet.
For a lot of students, snow days are the perfect time to relax. “When there is no school and it’s just a snow day, I just casually spend my time playing some video games. Sometimes, I might just do school work so I can casually get caught up and feel great about myself,” shared sophomore Skylar DuBois-Kleinhans. Being at home isn’t the only part of snow days students enjoy, though. DuBois-Kleinhans continued, “I really do enjoy snow days, even though I don’t get a chance to see my friends or have a chance to bowl after school. Sleeping in also feels great, but it just kind of wastes your time and the adventurous things you can do. The fun part is just not sitting on a chair listening to someone lectures about science or math.”
“Waking up and realizing that there is no school today is arguably one of the best feelings a student could have,” commented fellow sophomore Gracie Lombard. “The best way to spend a snow day would be to sleep in, catch up on school work, and take the time to relax. If there’s no more school work to do, reading and watching movies is the most enjoyable way to spend snow days.”
Gaming seems to be a popular pastime for students during snow days. “One of the best ways to spend a snow day would be playing Animal Jam on my tablet,” stated sophomore Jazmine Rodriguez. Rodriguez thinks being able to play games, mainly Animal Jam, is the best way to spend a snow day. “It may be a game only a few people know, but I love it.”
While gaming and relaxing is clearly a popular choice for snow days, some students favor getting schoolwork done instead. Senior Kalen Lipka shared, “Snow days always have been, and always will be a double edged sword; a sword that can cut away educational responsibilities, but a sword that can also prolong stress and especially due dates. So to me, a snow day is best spent by waking up late and brewing up a nice hot coffee or hot chocolate, depending on how productive you want to be.” Lipka continued, “Once you’re done enjoying your leisurely morning, then it is a perfect time to procrastinate any and all schoolwork for the entirety of the day while you enjoy being warm and free of responsibilities.”
For a lot of students, snow days are time to spend at home relaxing and enjoying hobbies. For some students, though, a snow day means more of an opportunity to spend with their loved ones. Senior Rowan Harris spent the entire day with her boyfriend and his family. “We always get Biggby coffee every Wednesday, so we would have gone out anyway, but having the whole day together was fun,” she shared. She continued with, “We got our Biggby and we spent the day cozied up watching TV shows with his family. We ordered some food and just enjoyed the time together.”
Spending time with loved ones is popular for snow days, and sophomore Olesya Mullins agrees. Mullins said, “I think the best thing to do on a snowday is to sleep in and then, do some homework or just spend time with family.” Mullins also mentioned, “Nothing is better than spending time with the family, there’s so many things to do with them.” Mullins also loved taking the day off from school.
With it only being halfway through winter, it’s clear Michigan will probably have some more snow to dump on St. Louis Schools throughout the next few months. With all that in mind, students probably have many more snow days ahead, but it doesn’t hurt to appreciate the snow days we do get.
