The Sharks Innovative Vehicle Design team officially held its first event of the year at Kettering University, Wednesday, Oct. 25, to build remote control cars.
Innovative Vehicle Design, or IVD for short, is led by teacher Scott Nehmer. The team was created to get students interested in the transportation industry. In the club, students take large remote control cars, and alter them to increase their performance capabilities. Part of the judging process includes how the alterations have been used to improve the vehicle.
The competition hasn’t happened yet, as this event was mostly to get students interested and prepared for the competition. Luckily, Nehmer thinks his club is pretty ready for the competition!
“It seemed like the students had a good time, and the first-timers seemed excited,” shared Nehmer. “I hope that can translate into a good effort for the competition.”
It wasn’t just Nehmer who was excited, though. The students who attended the trip seemed pretty enthusiastic, too! Senior Noah Buchanan commented, “It was an interesting experience, and we learned a lot about what is offered at the college.”
Kettering University, which hosted the first event, also allowed students to get a feel for what life at the college would be like. It also helped students get invested in the transportation industry!
That wasn’t the only part of the event, though, as Buchanan had more to say. “I’d have to say the best memory was the van ride there and back,” he shared. “All of the nonsense we got into was so fun.”
Clearly, the IVD event is building connections for both further IVD events and life connections. In the future, the team plans to return to actually compete at future events.
