Over the course of Winter break, the St. Louis High School wrestling team competed at the Freeland Dual Team Tournament, Dec. 22. Along the side of Freeland and Gaylord, St. Louis also competed against Cass City, Beaverton, and Charlton Heston Academy. 

The Sharks came out on top, however, there was a three-way tie for first! St. Louis beat Gaylord, Gaylord beat Freeland, and Freeland beat St. Louis. However, the Sharks scored the most combined points throughout the day and therefore earned the first-place trophy! 

To start the day, the Sharks lost to Freeland in a close match 37-35. Next, SLHS wrestled their way to 84 points against St. Helen Charlton- Heston, which scored zero. The following score for SLHS was 52 to Beaverton’s, 27. Next was Gaylord, and this was where things got intense, The Sharks beat Gaylord on the last match of the dual to earn a 39-33 victory. Finally, the Sharks beat Cass City 64-12

Coach Kevin Kuhn expressed, “We had a slow start and took a loss we should

not have against Freeland 37-35 but then bounced back nicely. Colin Kuhn and Alex Rodriguez went undefeated and beat some quality wrestlers.” 

Kuhn also expressed, “The day ended in an odd way. We beat Gaylord who beat Freeland so they went to a tiebreaker of how many points scored throughout the day. I knew we blew the other teams out pretty good so we were in a good position to win the tourney.” Besides the big win for the team, Justice Onstott wrestled his way to his 100th win! He earned this big win on a gritty triple overtime win. Onstott has grown so much stronger physically and mentally over the course of his high school career. Kuhn stated, “Justice will go down as someone who really could create some big-time throws. Those are exciting to watch and almost always end in pins. Justice has always had his own style and there was no changing that. He’s scored a ton of points over the years for his team.”
