St. Louis varsity pompon team competed at Regionals Jan. 30 and qualified for the state competition, at Northville high school.

The team started its day early due to a two hour drive to competition. St. Louis was one of only two class C schools in attendance, and this was a gym that was new to the team. To qualify for the state competition a team must have a 75% overall average in all categories. Some categories include appearance, smiles/showmanship, use of poms, formations/transitions, and and overall impression.

Head Coach Madi Shattuck was very excited. She commented, “I couldn’t be more proud of these girls with the constant changes and challenges we have had to overcome this season so far. Due to our school district being shut down the week of the regional competition, our team had to move to a new location. Having never performed on this floor, these girls qualified to compete at the state competition at Eastern Michigan University. They have made two very proud coaches!”

The team performed their routine to the song “Level Up” by Ciara. The commenter praised their kickline and how they got into it. The team is currently working hard on improving the routine to implement the judge’s constructive criticism and make the routine more difficult.

This is senior Sam Burt’s second time qualifying for the state competition. She said, “I think the day went well. The whole team was pretty stressed out. I’m really proud of us for qualifying for state, and I think it’s an awesome way to end my senior season.”

Their next competition is the State Competition on Saturday, Feb. 13  at Eastern Michigan University.
