COVID testing and contact tracing have been major factors in sports season this year.

The St. Louis Wrestling team started undergoing some changes Feb. 26, when a member of the team tested positive for the Coronavirus. This resulted in a few of the students getting quarantined for contact tracing.

The wrestler who tested positive stated, “I was utterly surprised that the test came back positive because of the fact that I had zero symptoms. Today I feel completely fine, and I hate having to quarantine myself. This whole situation is really mind-blowing, and I just want to get back to practice.”

Contact tracing is the process of notifying people of their potential exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19, providing information about the virus, and discussing symptom history and other relevant health information. Instructions for self-quarantine and monitoring for symptoms, and support and referrals to testing, clinical services, and other essential support services are provided, as well.

The wrestler’s current head coach is history teacher, Mr. Kuhn. Kuhn voiced, “I affected a whole weeks’ worth of competition. It basically created a 24 point swing against everybody we wrestled last week. It’s frustrating because it is something that is out of my control, and as a coach, I want to control as many things as possible.”

One of the wrestlers who was sent home because of contact tracing is Justice Onstott. This year is his second year of high school wrestling. Onstott claims, “When I found out I got contact traced, I was mad because I don’t really enjoy doing work online. I was told that I can come back Tuesday. Me not being at school and practicing with the team is affecting my wrestling very much because of the fact that I am not able to go to wrestling practice. I am going to have to work out from home, and hopefully, the quarantine will not affect my wrestling season. I know that two other wrestlers and three other people were also sent home because of contact tracing, and they told me that they can’t wait to return back to school.”
