Christmas decorations in October?

Christmas Decor around St. Louis

Kay Stites, Staff Writer

October is the month of everything scary. Early fall is meant for pumpkins and scarecrows, but apparently some stores didn’t get the memo. Big name-brand stores like Wal-Mart, Target, and Menards are already setting up their Christmas inventory. It just seems a  little hasty for my liking.

In Dollar General, I was overwhelmed by the amount of wreaths and tinsel placed carefully on the shelves. They haven’t given Halloween any time to shine before overshadowing it with Christmas festivities.

In order to allow people to enjoy a holiday, you must let us decorate for that holiday without shoving red and green sparkly paraphernalia down our throats. In all honesty, I’m surprised that radios have yet to play Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” on a constant repeat.

Yes, Christmas is a fun, cheerful time of the year, but when it impedes with my Halloween spooky-time, then I intervene. Maybe a Christmas protest would knock some sense into some people. Dollar Tree has entire aisles specifically for Christmas stockings, candy, apparel, and decorations.

I’d understand putting up Thanksgiving decor because pumpkins, cornucopias, and leaves can all be mistaken for both Thanksgiving and fall decor.

To finish off this Christmas “rant-palooza,” who’s going to egg houses or smash pumpkins in people’s yards with good ol’ Saint Nicholas peeking around every corner? It’s critical (not really, but we’ll pretend) to celebrate in the moment, not in the future.
