The Saint Louis varsity wrestling team enhanced their conference record to 6-0 when they hosted St. Charles and Michigan Lutheran Seminary at home Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020. Saint Louis defeated MLS 69-12 and defeated St. Charles 60-15.
The two match winners of the night were Dylan Marr, Conner Daniels, Lochlan O’Boyle, Gavin Giles, Alex McDonald, Justice Onstott, Ean Bradley, and Alex Newton.
Newton said, “The team’s energy was ecstatic; everyone was into the meet. The whole goal was to do everything right and to win the meet.” Newton added that he thinks Tristin Baker showed the most improvement that night.
Daniels said, “The team was a lot more energetic this meet probably because it was a home meet.” Daniels added that the main goal was to stay off their backs.
Saint Louis wrestling continued their season at Shepherd for the John Harris Invitational, Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020. The Sharks finished in eighth place overall. Baker and Nate March finished 6th, Robert Long-Terwilliger and Lochlan O’Boyle finished 5th, Justice Onstott was 4th, Alex Newton was 3rd, and Gavin Giles took first place. Giles also earned the Thor hammer for pinning his way through the competition.
Coach Kuhn said, “Overall, we had some let downs at key moments. We had several wrestlers winning convincingly who found ways to go to their backs and get pinned. That’s unacceptable when you are in a position to win, you have to find a way to take advantage of the situation.”
Newton also stated, “As a team, I don’t think we did very well. A lot still needs to be improved, but the big one is technique and stances. I feel like what is working well is our conditioning. (our) workouts that we get during practice are making us bigger, stronger, and faster.”
Saint Louis varsity wrestling will wrestle at Carrollton Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020, for the league title.
