It’s that time of the year where football and basketball are on a lot of people’s minds. While some people play the two sports and others watch them, a more recent approach has taken over and that’s Fantasy. Fantasy Football and basketball are games where players act as general managers, building teams of real NFL/NBA players and competing against other managers’ teams.
A team’s score is based on the actual statistics achieved by players in real-life games, such as yards, touchdowns, and receptions for football. The manager with the highest score against the opposing manager is given a win for that week while the manager with the lowest score is given a loss. At the end of the season and after a playoff period, a winner is crowned victorious.
Students at SLHS have taken a liking to this game as it is very competitive. Lucas Zimmerman, a senior at SLHS, states, “It’s fun to play against classmates of mine and see if my team is able to beat my opponent’s team. My team isn’t very good this year, so I’m not expecting to win a lot.Winning can come down to the final second, to the final decimal point. Youcould win by 50 points or lose by one. That’s what makes it fun.”
There is no doubt that students are enjoying the competitive aspect of fantasy. Another very competitive player, senior Micheal Borie, had this to say: “Fantasy Football is fun. It gives fans more to do than to just watch their favorite team. They can root for players on other teams making football and basketball more exciting. My team this year is tremendous. I lost an important player on my roster, but I’m making it work. Shoutout to Christian McCathrey.“
Despite winning or losing, students at SLHS have seemed to increasingly like this game– taking it to another level by making the loser of the season do a punishment that the winner of the season chooses. Punishments like drinking a gallon of milk while running a mile has been a popular punishment idea for this year.
Senior Bentley Inbody, who has taken part in Fantasy Football, is currently last place in his league and on the fast track to being the loser of the season. Inbody says, “My team is trash this season. I made some poor trading decisions like trading Puca. Fantasy was fun until I started losing. I hope the punishment isn’t terrible this year.”
On the other hand, Borie, who is in first place at the moment in the same league with Inbody, says this about the current punishment idea for this season: “I can’t give away too much information yet, but I have many ideas for the punishment that will be life changing for the loser.“ Fantasy has definitely seemed to be a big hit this year giving students at SLHS some fun and excitement while watching football and basketball.
