The St. Louis High School varsity softball team played in districts Friday, May 30, in Hemlock. Their first game was against Ithaca. The girls came out with a win in their first game with a final of 5-3. Then they played Hemlock for the championship showdown, and the Sharks won 6-3, to secure their second consecutive district title.
Sophomore Grace Devine stated, “Both games went very well. Our whole team was hyped the whole time even when we were down.” Devine then added, “It felt amazing winning districts. I am feeling very good about regionals. We have to stay focused, hyped, and work hard at practice this week.”
Junior Halle Hoyt commented, “I personally think I played well. I also feel like I did a great job of encouraging my teammates the whole time. Overall, the games went very well. We came together as a team well. We also did a great job of keeping the energy up in the dugout even when we were losing early on in the game.” Hoyt also said, “It feels pretty good to win districts back-to-back. Beating Ithaca was such a great feeling, especially because their coaches were cocky and were expecting to win. I feel very good about going into regionals. If Paige is on, then I think we will do good. We also just have to start manufacturing running earlier instead of waiting till later in the game to start hitting and scoring. If we play like I know we can, then no one will beat us, and it is going to be fun.
In game one, Paige Luneack struck out nine and only gave us four hits. Again in game two, Luneack only allowed four hits while striking out five. Ellie Katt in both games led the team with two hits in each game.
Overall, It sounds like the girls are very excited to be back to back district champs and are proud they are. They are getting ready to take on regionals Saturday, June 7, in Middleton to hopefully bring home the win.
