Sophomore Tess Farkas just broke a track and field school record in discus at the Jack Pine Conference Championship April 30, and then again May 10! Along with this major accomplishment, Farkas is also a back-to-back regional shot put champion. Farkas was also 2025 the regional discus champion.
Farkas has made quite the name for herself in the throwing category already, and she is only a sophomore. She recently threw a personal best of 36 ’11 in shot put at the regional competition securing the first place spot in the competition.
Earlier in the season, Farkas broke the school record for women’s discus with a throw of 121 ’10. The record was previously held by Alicia Pilmore who threw 121 ‘9 in 2010.
Farkas has been throwing since she was in the 6th grade, and the practice has clearly paid off. “I have put in many hours in and out of season,” stated Farkas. “My coach Leslie has helped me the most.”
While Farkas didn’t medal at the state competition last year, her new personal records are motivating her further, and she is hoping to place in the top eight of the competition this year. A top eight finish would earn her all-state honors.
Fellow teammate Alexis Hitsman is a big supporter of Farkas and is proud to see her teammate succeed. “My reaction to Tess beating the school record is ‘speechless’. I knew she would do it before her senior year, and I’m beyond proud of her,” Hitsman stated. “Watching Tess improve is crazy. She practices a lot and works so hard over the summer and winter.”
As far as shock goes, Hitsman wasn’t at all surprised at Farkas’s performance. “It doesn’t surprise me that Tess is back-to-back regional champ. She works hard in the summer and winter and constantly works harder and harder at practice,” stated Hitsman.
Farkas will be back in action at the MHSAA State Championship in a few weeks for both shot put and discus!
