Sunday, May 11, the St. Louis High School band and steel band members had the opportunity to attend a STOMP concert in Midland.
STOMP, a percussion group that uses the body and ordinary objects to create a physical theatre performance using rhythms, gave an exceptional performance in Midland to all students who opted to attend.
Junior and steel band member Gracie Lombard shared, “My dance teacher introduced me to STOMP when I was younger, maybe like 10. I was really excited when I learned about our opportunity to go as a band because I like STOMP.” On the concert itself, Lombard stated, “It was so cool. It was really impressive. Looking at it from the audience perspective, I couldn’t help but imagine how hard it would be to learn those routines and practice to sound that good. My favorite part was when they used long, staff-like sticks and fought each other with them in sync. It sounded so cool and was really fun to watch.”
Concert band member Hudsyn Humble shared a similar opinion. “When I watched the performance, it was amazing and I loved it. It was so shocking how easily they were doing it and how painful it must have been since they tap on their fingers a lot and hit things hard. In the best way, they were like little kids up there banging on pots and pans. The performance was half comedy, half music, and it was really funny. My favorite part was when it was almost scary and they only had their headlights on and started making roaring noises with their stretched out whirly tubes, and the loud bass was pounding. I’m super glad I decided to go because I loved the beats and how cool it was,” she said.
Altogether, the trip was a valuable experience for students, and was a remarkable performance to witness.
