St. Louis track and field practice kicked off in the gymnasium, Monday, March 10. Both the girls and boys on the team are excited to start the 2025 outdoor season.
The team as a whole has not been to team state since 2021, but a few individuals are returning from state competition from the last outdoor season. The individuals for the guys include Hayden Shattuck, who competed in the 4×800, and Landon Pestrue who competed in the 4×800, 1600, and 3200 in state competition. As for the girls returning from state last year, there are Brianna Griffin and Emily Acre who competed in the 4×100, and Tess Farkas who threw shotput last season.
Although outdoor has just started, some St. Louis track athletes have been determined and trained in the offseason months throughout the winter. Noah Tripp, Gavin Yarnell, Shattuck, and Pestrue have competed in multiple meets in the indoor track season this year, honing their skills for outdoor competitions. Also, Abby Dice and Sydney Dickman have been competing for the upcoming season as well at these meets.
Sawyer Wonch is an athlete in particular who is ready for the outdoor season. He said, “The reason as to why I am excited for track season to start is so I can polish my skills and get ready for the state meet. I’m ready to watch people trip over hurdles, and I’ll cringe knowing that it would hurt. I’m super ready to get a start on shot put and discus.”
Dice is also someone who is looking forward to the start of the track season. She stated, “I am ready for outdoor season to start because I have been training hard all winter. My main goal this season is to focus on the mile and possibly PRing when it’s all said and done.”
All in all, SLHS track athletes seem ready for the upcoming outdoor season, and look forward to what it will entail.
