Mrs. Godwin’s Chemistry classes have begun their work on the newest project of the school year – perfume synthesis. The unit, “Stoichiometry,” takes the understanding of mole-to-mole ratios and conversions of particles to moles to other particles to synthesize an iconic smell unique to each group. Beginning March 13, 2025, students started their presentations and began to make the perfumes with the help of Godwin herself.
“The inspiration for this lab came from a fragrance chemistry class I took when I was at Alma College, which is where I did the lab for myself. Fragrances and perfumes are made based on ratios, which have been the calculations we have been performing with stoichiometry, which is how it relates to chemistry,” said Godwin. “I’ve had many delightful perfumes made in the past and many bad ones, and I can’t remember any specific favorites, but my favorite part is having it all come together with the commercials and presentations and determining a winner. One of the most memorable ones that students tend to talk about is DBR, which was originally created by Junior Anguiano, Nick Wirgau, and Jaylin Jackson,” she added.
Junior Lillian Billings is currently working on a vanilla-scented perfume, noting that, “we are currently making a cool musk vanilla with a hint of citrus. My group is not too sure on the branding yet since we just made it. We wanted to make something that was going to remind you of a dark day or like a rainy day. We have found a template for our slideshow and we will continue working on it some more. We do, however, have our final product for the perfume.”
Junior Javier Anger said that, “We are trying to make a musky smelling cologne that pulls in the ladies, and commercials will be spot on when it comes to pulling in the buyers. We are taking inspiration from Versace and Gucci Cologne.” He added, “We’re in the process of experimenting. We really wanna get down to the perfect scent. I am confident we will find an amazing cologne.”
