When it comes to being a senior, many underclassmen may wonder what to expect. Seniors at St. Louis High School has spent four years preparing for graduation, and now here it is… but is it how they pictured it?
For some seniors, it was a lot like what they were expecting. In fact, according to Rebekah Ross, “As an underclassman, I thought senior year would look more like the movie Grease. I was expecting it to be a really fun experience where people skipped all the time for fun and didn’t do too much work. When I got to senior year, it was a lot like what I expected, but now the senioritis is causing me to want to skip, and not just wanting to skip for fun.”
Ross also said, “When you become a senior, there are many things you can expect. For example, the amount of freedom in your education is almost overwhelming. And of course, there is the senioritis. I thought that senioritis was a joke, but now that I am a senior, I experience it just about every day. Overall though, you should expect to have a lot of fun. Senior year is really freeing, and if you don’t start maturing, senior year will really force you to. I think the hardest part of senior year is deciding what to do after graduation, and then trying to make it through the year once you’ve decided. It almost drains the motivation out of academic success, but on the other hand, everything else is pretty easy.”
One of the big things that seniors are struggling with right now is senioritis. This is a term commonly used when students, normally seniors, begin to notice a decline in their motivation and effort toward schoolwork, typically at the end of the school year. This makes it harder for them to not only want to do their work and be in class, but also they just want to be done with school entirely.
Senior Alex Tatroe was expecting senior year to be full of stress, but overall it has been the easiest school year. Tatroe said, “It is really easy to contract senioritis but really hard to get rid of it. Once you fall behind, it can be really hard to get back on track. So make sure to stay on top of things and always ask for help when you need it. There is never anything wrong with asking for help. Being a senior is a lot of preparing for the real world that you are about to experience rather than simple things. Yeah there are only two requirements for classes, English and Math classes, but they cover a lot you would expect to use in the real world.”
Overall, seniors are a good source for underclassmen who are nervous or don’t know what to expect when they get to their final year.
