The Oscars took place once again, Saturday, March 2, 2025 to celebrate the 97th Academy Awards.
Presented yearly by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to celebrate cinematic achievements, the Academy Awards were first held on May 16, 1929. The ceremony covers 23 categories including, best picture, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, direction, original screenplay, adapted screenplay, cinematography, production design, editing, original score, original song, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, sound, visual effects, foreign-language film, animated feature film, animated short, live-action short, documentary feature, and documentary short.
However, most focus is on the six main categories, which include: best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best actor, best actress, best director, and best picture. Kieran Culkin took home best supporting actor for his role in the film A Real Pain, while Zoe Saldaña won best supporting actress for the film Emilia Pérez. Best actor and best actress were won by Adrien Brody and Mikey Madison for the films The Brutalist and Anora. Anora also won “Best Picture”, and its director, Sean Baker, won “Best Director.”
Senior Rebekah Ross shared, “I usually watch the Oscars every year, unless my dad changes the channel before it comes on since he doesn’t enjoy watching the new fashion trends walk the red carpet. I wasn’t necessarily rooting for anyone to win, but I didn’t want Wicked to win in some of the categories it was in. Unpopular opinion, but I’m not a huge fan of the movie. I respect the work that was put into it, but in the end, it’s already been a Broadway musical, and I wasn’t a big fan of the Wizard of Oz either, so I didn’t care for Wicked. My favorite part of the show was definitely the Adam Sandler joke, and seeing all the fashion. I love judging new trends as if I were a fashion designer, when half the time my outfits are simple T-shirts and jeans.”
Junior Gracie Lombard also shared, “I thought the Oscars were fine this year, but I wish Timothee Chamlet would have won best actor. I also wish Wicked would have won more because I loved the movie so much.”
