With the large variety of sports and clubs at St. Louis High School, there are multiple reasons as to why these activities catch the attention of many students. Some join to spend time with friends and others simply have a connection to that activity.
Senior Devanz Svelti-Cruz joined the wrestling team at the beginning of the season for the first time. Svelti-Cruz said, “With only being in the sport for one year, I really wish I would have joined when I was a freshman because then I could have been better than when I first started. So I wish I had more time to get better but overall, I grew a connection to the sport and that’s what makes me sad that it ended so soon. I was intrigued by the aggressive nature of wrestling which drew me in, but what really made me want to do this sport is the first day I went to the practice.” Svelti-Cruz continued with, “When I went to wrestling practice for my first day at this school and it was a red flag day. It was torture and some of the wrestlers there told me it’s not usually this bad and that I came on a bad day, but I fell in love with wrestling that very day. I loved the challenge. But overall I’d say the best part of this sport is it is physically demanding, and it gets you in the best shape of your life.”
Although Svelti-Cruz was able to do wrestling the last year of his high school career, other students have been a part of their activities even back in middle school. Remington Snyder is a sophomore and has been a part of many school activities, one of them being cross country and winter run club. He said, “What made me want to do winter run club is that I’m in cross country so that way I’m not running alone in the winter season. I’ve been running cross country since sixth grade but I would run with my uncle when I was in fifth grade. I didn’t do winter run club last year as I was recovering from an injury. However, I look forward to continuing both later down the road. I would have to say the best part of the sport is how fun it is and the awesome coaches which is what I think draws people into it.”
Overall, each club and sport has its own thing that makes it unique and provides a way of making new athletes interested to become a part of the teams.
