There are many kinds of relationships, and dating is one that is prominent at St. Louis High School. Family members and friends are very common as well, with many students having parents working on the staff at St. Louis Public Schools. The most common question students ask themselves though is, “What should a relationship look like, and what’s important in one?”
“The three most important things you need in any relationship is communication, trust, and overall respect,” said sophomore Livy Peak. None of these things would change if it’s more than a friendship, speaking from her own experience, if you don’t have those things, then it wouldn’t be a good relationship or functional one. “Something that would definitely hurt any type of relationship is dishonesty,” she added.
“I think you need to have loyalty, honesty, and someone caring, because if you don’t have someone with those, you might get hurt and have bad feelings,” said junior Harlee Dowd. Dowd does think it might change depending on the person because it’s hard to change something that you’re used to.
“I think the three most important things in any relationship are truth, trust, and selflessness. Truth and trust go together and without these, who do we know who our friends are, or even those we love?” said Aiden Shaw. Shaw thinks that truth and trust help build an understanding of who a person is.
Selflessness is basically just putting others before one’s own self, meaning putting friends and family’s needs before one’s own. “I think failing to be truthful might harm a relationship. I’m not saying you’ll have to be completely honest, but you would probably have to be truthful most of the time to keep a healthy relationship,” Shaw concluded.
