The St. Louis varsity girls’ basketball team went to districts Monday, March 3, in Montrose and played Chesaning for the first round. The sharks played a tough game and were ahead the entire game. Winning by the final of 45-26.
Junior Halle Hoyt stated, “I think the game went well. I knew we would win so I wasn’t too worried. I think the team overall did well. Everyone got in and positively contributed to the game in some way.” Hoyt then said, “I think I did pretty well. I did foul out but that’s okay. We know the next team is gonna be tougher, so we just have to be super aggressive and focus on playing good defense.”
Another player, sophomore Courtney VanAlstine commented, “I feel pretty good about winning our first round of districts. I think I played pretty well. I definitely have improved from the beginning of the season but still have more room to improve.” She then added, “The team played well other than all the fouls, which foul trouble is a big deal when it comes to a team with only nine players. The plan for our second round of districts is to just go out there and play our best and win. In order to win, we have to not have so many turnovers and not as many fouls. I believe we have a strong team and could win if we all put in the work.”
Also, senior Zoey Clarke said, “Coming into the season, I did not expect much since we had lost some key players the year before, but to see us make it past the first round of districts was a really great feeling! I think overall, I definitely could have done better and for the next game I need to be more careful with my fouls.” Clarke then added, “As a team, I thought we did okay overall, but we can always do better and improve. Going into the second round of districts the plan is to definitely play a lot better. St. Charles is definitely a more advanced team than Chesaning, so we have to be able to make smarter choices in this next game and just play the game well.”
Overall, the girls played a really good game for their first round of districts. They are headed to round two of districts back in Montrose Wednesday, March 5, and will face St. Charles to hopefully win and go to the district final.
