The boys’ varsity bowling team finished the week in Muskegon after they made their way to the state tournament by earning first place at regionals.
Starting off Friday, Feb. 28, the boys began state with the team portion. They started the day with high spirits but by the end, the team placed last. Senior Michael Mitchell, who is captain of the team, said during regionals, “As a captain, I’m excited about the team going to states because everyone did a good job between bowling and cheering each other on. For teams, it was nerve-racking because I didn’t know for sure if we made the cut for going to state. As for the individual, I knew I was making it after I was done bowling because I was in fourth and they took the top seven.”
Mitchell also said, “I think the boys have done amazing and there has been a lot of change with how we bowl from the beginning of the year to the end. We have improved especially with Elliot and Branden. They were struggling and they figured it out and Branden shot higher games than he was at the beginning of the season. As the season comes to an end, I’m sad that it’s my last year bowling mainly because we have such a good team going right now and I’m going to keep bowling after high school but it sucks it is my last year.”
Although this is Mitchell’s last year bowling, other members are excited to come back next year. Sophomore Thailan Raby said, “When I heard that our team had made state, I was surprised and excited. We have worked hard to get to where we are and hearing the announcement proved it. When going to state sure there were high stakes but for me it was just another day of bowling and doing what I needed to do and that was to do my best.” Raby added, “Although I am sad that we have some good seniors leaving, we have some good bowlers to bring up next year to fill their space. I am really proud of the team, we put in a lot of hard work not just for ourselves but for each other too.”
Even though the season has officially come to an end, the boys didn’t let the loss get them down. Instead, they finished out strong and showed great improvement through the season.
