Students at Saint Louis High School are wondering which is better, older or newer video games?
Video games have been around for many years. In fact, the first video games began in the 1950s with simple computer-based games like “Pong.” As time went on, games evolved over and over again becoming the games known today. With that said, there is always a topic for debate: which games are better, new or old?
Some students prefer older video games, like junior Leia Firman who stated, “I personally prefer older video games from the early 2000’s. I feel like they were more exciting and didn’t drag out. I feel like some video games have issues that need to be sorted out by the companies and it’s good that they look for their buyers’ opinions. But I also feel like a lot of fan service comes with that as well. I do think a lot of games are easier, but there’s definitely a portion that are difficult. I can finish a game that has one story in two days, but if it has multiple storylines I feel like I’m able to spend more time on it without feeling sad after I finish it.”
On the contrary, some people prefer newer games. Junior Ben Godfrey stated, “Personally, I like newer games more and think that they are better, but I also think that they can be absolute pieces of trash where a company is only looking for a nice cash grab and could care less about the actual customer. I think that older games are also good and they don’t have that factor, but at times they feel like open space and they’re just boring. Even though the companies behind newer games tend to be money hungry, I think that small, newer indie games tend to be what I enjoy playing the most,” added Godfrey.
Overall, students seem to be pretty divided on this topic. Some prefer the older, retro, challenging video games of the past, while others prefer the newer, visually appealing recent video game titles. In the end, the only thing that matters is preference.
