The St. Louis girls basketball team was in action Friday, Feb. 14, away in Clare and then again Monday, Feb.17 away in Ithaca. The girls played hard for both games and did the best they could do. They fell short to Clare but put up a good fight in the first half but going into the second half they lost. The final score was 24-46. The girls then played Ithaca and kept a close game the whole time and ended with a win. 37-32, which kept the rival flag where it belongs.
Senior Brynn Saxton stated, “The game against Clare was not our best game. We didn’t play like we could’ve, which definitely affected the score. The game against Ithaca wasn’t that bad. The first half we played well getting a lead then the second half we let up the lead and didn’t play like the first half. Our team has had a rough time going all four quarters, but I think we have made improvements since the beginning of the season.” Saxton then added, “I think I played okay. I definitely need to be more careful with my fouls during these games. I could improve by doing better on defense and being careful with my fouls. Overall, the team could improve by making less turnovers and just talking together as a whole court.”
Also, senior Zoey Clarke commented, “The games against Ithaca and Clare were two completely different ball games. We seemed to really struggle against Clare with shots, turnovers, you name it and we did it. When it comes to the Ithaca game, we really seemed to have a better time moving the ball around, breaking their press, making our shots, and overall making better choices. Overall, the team can always do better as a whole. We can always cut down on our turnovers and make sure to look up while dribbling the ball. We also all need to work on getting all on the same page. We are lucky if four of us even know what we are doing on the court and knowing our plays. We need to know our offense and defense.” Clarke then added, “As an individual though, I definitely think I could do better for myself and for my team. I need to add a lot more to the table than what I have been giving recently. I could definitely improve on keeping a good head space and not getting frustrated, while also getting more rebounds and making my shots.”
Overall, it sounds like the girls had a few tough games but didn’t give up and still played their best. The girls are ready to play again Wednesday, Feb. 19, home against Pinconning.
