The freshmen of St. Louis High School recently attended the yearly meeting to discuss the possibility of purchasing class rings and varsity jackets.
St. Louis brings in Herff Jones, the same company that provides caps and gowns for seniors, to advertise about ordering class rings and varsity jackets. When ordering class rings, students are given multiple options to choose from, including classic, modern, and vintage rings. The prices for rings can range from $250 and on up into the hundreds. When it comes to jackets, Herff Jones offers a variety of patches in order to customize the jacket.
Furthermore, the history behind class rings can be traced back to 1855. The rings were originally a military accessory but later became available to high school students as a way to signify accomplishments and a new phase in student’s lives. On the other hand, varsity jackets were first introduced by Harvard in 1865 to their basketball team, as stated in the article “The History of Varsity Fashion”
In regards to the meeting, freshman Victoria Trevino stated, “At first, I was like Ooo, that’s very Maximalist; I was a bit overwhelmed with choices! I think it could be worth getting a class ring, considering the pricing and repairs and the sentimental value of one. I think the prices are appropriate considering you get a lifetime of free repairs, and it’s a one-time fee you can pay little by little. So it’s fair for you and the company.”
However, others have had different thoughts on the prices. Junior Gracie Lombard shared, “They are pretty expensive. I think they should probably be cheaper. Mine happened to be really expensive. I got my varsity jacket from a different company because my brother also got his from there. Although I really like class rings, I think they’re really cool and can represent what you’re involved in. I think it’s worth it; I would recommend getting one if you want something to represent your time in high school.”
