Valentine’s day is a day where couples go out and celebrate their love, going above and beyond to show how much they cherish each other. The day isn’t a nationally recognized holiday though it is celebrated throughout many countries. It’s one day of the year when couples have the excuse to spoil one another, but is it really a needed holiday? Many would argue couples should love their partners year-round. On the other hand, others believe a single day to prove how much you care for your partner is a nice thought. Showing affection bound to a single day could be seen as pointless, yet what is the opinion of the Shark tank students?
As Valentine’s Day is a day to spread love, someone who loves to spread love to her partner is senior Rebekah Ross. Valentine’s day is a prime time for many young couples to get out and have fun. Ross said, “I think that Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be a needed holiday because people should show love every day, and not just wait until one specific day to show love, and then never. I do believe that Valentine’s Day can be considered a consumer holiday because people use it as their only excuse to show love and buy their significant other chocolate and flowers. It has turned into a consumer holiday.”
Many people agree Valentine’s day is really a consumer holiday, a day to spend money excessively to show adoration. Yet is that really the case? When getting older, it can be harder to spend time with one’s partner without careers or emergencies getting in the way. Sometimes a day to just have the excuse to spoil someone might make up for all the time lost to the world.
Someone who loves to spend time with his partner is Senior Damian Rosenberger who is always more than willing to do whatever it takes to make his girl happy. Rosenberger said, “I think Valentine’s day is a needed holiday because it’s a day to express how you feel about your partner and have an excuse to spend more time with them. My favorite Valentine’s Day tradition is going out to eat and getting/giving candy. It’s my favorite because I get to spend time with my significant other, but I do feel it’s a consumer holiday. All the things they advertise in stores are things that are not needed, just there to attract people and have them spend more money.”
No matter what side of the argument you’re on, the idea can be special to many. Having the day to do whatever you’d like with discounts at many establishments is a plus to many couples residing within the United States and everywhere it is celebrated. The excuse to spend the whole day with your partner is not one many people can easily obtain, so having it be a holiday is the next best thing for them.
