The St. Louis High School Poms team has the potential to make it to state once again in the current competition season.
Despite being easily confused with cheerleading, poms and cheer are not considered the same. According to The Gazette article “Poms vs. Cheer”, one main difference between the two is uniforms. Poms wear more dance-based uniforms compared to cheer uniforms. The performances for poms are also more dance-based while cheerleading is more geared towards lifts and acrobatics.
When it comes to members of the poms team, Skylar DuBois-Kleinhans shared, “Poms consists of almost everything related to dance. For example, we do choreos that are almost just like dance. I think of Poms as Just Dance, which I’m a huge fan of. We also use very bright things in our hands that are actually called ‘poms’. We use those to make cool moves and almost everything.” Moreover, DuBois-Kleinhans continued, “My favorite part of Poms is making the moves and performing them! Although I wasn’t really a performing-type person, I grew and developed to try new things and now it’s just part of what I do. Poms is both a regular sport AND a competitive sport. I recommend doing it so anyone can get the chance of what it feels like to be in Poms.
The SLHS Poms team made it to state last year and DuBois-Kleinhans believes they have the potential to do it once again, stating, “We work really hard and I know with that hard work they could only do better than last year.”
Fellow Poms member Brielle Leonard shared, “I have been in Poms for two years. I love this sport and will continue to do it until I cannot anymore. I think others should join the sport because it’s great and the people are even better.”
