The St. Louis varsity wrestling team travelled to Beaverton High School and took on Standish Sterling and Farwell Wednesday, Jan. 8.
The end result of this tri-meet was a victory for St. Louis as they defeated Standish Sterling 61-16 and Farwell 84-0. These victories put the number two division four team in the state Sharks at an 18-0 record for the season thus far.
Despite the scores at the meet, the team didn’t wrestle to the best of its abilities. “As far as the meet went… we wrestled down to the competition, without focus, and made a lot of mistakes,” stated Coach Kuhn.
Coach Kuhn was not completely satisfied with the team’s performance on the day. He claimed, “We definitely have a lot to work on. Most specifically, we should be doing what we drill every day. That’s not happening. Certain wrestlers aren’t buying into the system.”
Despite the poor performance, senior Justin Rodriguez remains optimistic: “I could most definitely work on a lot of things. My match taught me that I can’t come out and wrestle flat and have to keep wrestling throughout the whole match. I ended up teching the kid, but I should have pinned him when I had three opportunities to.”
Even with the negatives that came from this meet, Coach Kuhn continued, “This meet put us at 18-0 and kept us in the lead of the Jack Pine Conference.”
Overall, the performances from many of the St. Louis wrestlers Wednesday were sub-optimal. However, they still came through with two wins at Beaverton and look forward to improving and learning from their mistakes.
