Popcorn Friday has officially come back to St. Louis High School as of Dec. 13, 2024, when it marked the day of its return, and many students are buying popcorn to support the SLHS Prom Committee and help fund for prom and other future events. Every Friday, students can order popcorn freshly made within the school for a single dollar, and will be delivered to students while in class.
“I do think Popcorn Friday is a good idea. Halle Hoyt and I came up with it! I think it is a very smart thing for us to do since it was mainly started as a fundraising event. We have already made back the money spent on materials, and we have only had four of them!” said junior Saige Chase. “I am not fully sure about if we will be stopping after prom happens, but I do know that I would love to keep popping popcorn each Friday. I think this is a fun thing for students to look forward to every week, so I do hope that it does,” she added.
“We knew we needed to raise money for prom so we thought that Popcorn Friday would be a fun way to do it,” said Hoyt. “I think it will be continued because it will be a good way to raise money for our class and senior all night party,” she added.
“I had asked some of my students to brainstorm fundraiser ideas, so we could have money for prom. The students suggested Popcorn Friday as it was something they enjoyed in elementary school. It has been pretty successful for the small amount of time we do it each Friday. The ultimate goal is to have it raise money to go toward prom, which will hopefully bring prom ticket prices down for students, but that’s only if we raise enough money,” said teacher Mrs. Godwin. “I plan on continuing with it, whether it stays to go toward proms in the future or if it switches to another group fundraiser. Some students have complained about the price being $1 for a bag of popcorn, but if we charged any less, we would be breaking even or even losing money, when we are trying to raise money to put on a nice event at a lower cost for students. Halle Hoyt and Saige Chase have been working very hard with fundraisers such as Popcorn Friday and bake sales, to try and bring prom ticket prices down for students, while also making it a memorable event,” she added.
