The St. Louis High Schools boys’ and girls’ bowling teams gathered at Pins in Ithaca Sunday, Dec. 8, to play in a Memorial Tournament. Both teams played in three Petersen games which then, they went on to play two baker’s games against Shepherd, Breckenridge, and lastly Ithaca where the Sharks placed second. The boys also played in three Petersen games but only competed in two baker competitions against Breckenridge, and then Ithaca where they placed third.
Varsity girls’ team captain and junior, Gracie Lombard said, “The team did really well, especially because we started off as seed five. I’m very proud of where we placed and how well we did. It was pretty intense bowling against some of the teams, especially in the finals. All of the teams we played were really nice though, which is always a good thing.” Lombard concludes with, “The team was very positive that day, which is probably why we did so well. Everybody was encouraging each other and keeping a positive attitude while bowling and celebrating together after a good frame. I didn’t doubt us, but when we were seeded five after the first three Petersons I wasn’t sure how far we were going to make it in the tournament. After our first baker game though, I knew we were going to do really well if we kept the same energy and spirit for the next rounds. During the final game it was really intense and nerve wracking. I had to keep telling myself to focus and do well while also staying positive and encouraging for my teammates.”
Varsity boys’ team captain and senior, Michael Mitchell said, “It was nice. It is a different variety of experience. I think we did really well especially with the people we went against and the lane conditions.” Mitchell also said that during a point he started to doubt the playing conditions and said, “during the second match when we were going against Alma I started to doubt myself and the rest of my team. It was honestly very disappointing. I knew we were gonna lose but I wanted to make sure I was trying my best.”
Varsity coach, Shannan Mitchell said, “I was extremely proud of both teams in Sunday’s match. The girls worked extremely hard to push their way from fifth to second place. The boys also worked hard to place third. The teams have worked hard this year and I’m excited to see what future matches bring us.” All together, the teams worked hard and showed great effort in each game they played, showing their teamwork and positive attitudes throughout the memorial games.
