Every year the National Honor Society sells candy canes inside classrooms for 50 cents throughout December into early January. Afterwards, all the money collected goes into a charity of the NHS’s choosing. Even though it’s a small gesture, it has a big impact on the people who need those funds.
NHS Adviser Mrs. Kisser stated, “We usually raise about $250 every year. We have donated to Hope House and Child Advocacy, and it has really helped out. Sometimes we receive thank you notes from the groups we donate to, but I think all non-profit groups who work to serve the community appreciate the help, especially at this time of year. I hope to continue the tradition as it is a way to support local nonprofits and it’s also fun. Who doesn’t enjoy the occasional candy cane?”
Senior and NHS member Elly Starry said, “I hope we support G.A.I.N. (Gratiot Animals in Need) this year, but it isn’t confirmed yet. The NHS should continue selling candy canes. It is something that benefits other organizations and is something the students enjoy. I hope the following years can continue this way as well.”
“I often see students buying candy canes and I believe we are helping those in need,” stated junior Gracie Lombard. “When the NHS was voting we had great options, but I voted for GAIN to get our funds because I think it’s a great cause and will help them a lot. I think we should hold more of these events. It is fun, and it is very helpful for the community.”
Students in the mood for a treat should remember there are some in any classroom at any time and can be purchased to help someone in need.
