Spotify Wrapped dropped Wednesday, Dec. 4, and to user responses, the reviews were overwhelmingly negative and disappointed in this year’s outcome.
In the past when getting his or her wrapped, one would expect to see top genres, top artists, top albums, top songs, and messages from some of their top artists. All of this was presented with fun colorful backgrounds as music from someone’s top artists played in the background. This year, users were let down immensely by the lack of fun backgrounds and the absence of top genres and top albums. With the suspected addition of A.I. to the wrapped, many are disappointed in Spotify this year.
Last year, there was the option to add songs to a time capsule to see if the users still listened to those songs a year later! Spotify never gave the option to see those songs. Disappointed seems to be more than an understatement for how users must feel. On top of that, it’s rumoured that the statistics are messed up.
A lot of users are suspecting A.I. was used to make their wrapped because it just didn’t feel right, adding weird genres that Spotify said users listened to. Senior Alex Tatroe recounts her feelings saying, “Spotify wrapped this year was so disappointing. It felt plain and rushed even though it was hyped up to be even more. After such a long wait and for it getting delayed over and over again, it was such a let down. It felt AI generated to me, and if it wasn’t, the layout seemed rushed, as if the original was deleted by accident and this was a last ditch effort. Seriously, what is Sigilkore Strut Hyperpop?” The wrapped was hyped up a lot by Spotify, and users were ready to get the laughs like they have in the previous years, only to be greeted with something that felt rushed and not human.
Additionally, users’ top five songs weren’t correct for some people. The songs they didn’t really listen to showed up on that list. Senior Rebekah Ross recounts, “The most disappointing thing about my Spotify Wrapped was probably my top five songs. I really wanted my top five songs to be filled with The Door’s songs. But unfortunately, the only Door’s song was “Love Her Madly” which was at number three. Also the portion that talked about my eras. That was a little disappointing, as I don’t believe my eras actually matched.”
The wrapped this year was more than disappointing. It’s hard to even act excited when there was nothing that made the user feel even slightly happy to see their wrapped.
