The St. Louis High School wrestling team hosted division two against Fowlerville to start the season off with a dramatic bang, the sharks prevailing against the odds with a single point making the score 35-34. Later defeating a tough Chippewa Hills team 45-23.
The ‘hammers’ of the team, Drew Challender, Colin Kuhn, Alex Rodriguez, and Owen Fogel, had given their all by pinning the opponent to earn the team bonus points which accumulated 23 of the 35 points.
Coach Kuhn had helped the team in their practices to achieve their victory, stating, “A couple of our freshmen started in the varsity lineup and did well to contribute to the win. I think our game plan as coaches worked out to create the matchups we wanted, and the kids took it from there. Genaro Soto stepped up with the big pin as time ran out to secure the duel for us.” He continued, “A few of our weaknesses were exposed and we try to work toward fixing those issues every day in practice. I do feel our effort was outstanding, and it was nice to see us respond even though we went down about 20 points and had to claw our way back.”
One of the hammers, Colin Kuhn, was one of the biggest contributors to the sharks winning their first game of the year.
“I am very proud to be one of the best wrestlers on the team. I have come a long way since my freshman season because I have invested so much time into practices over the years. I am very happy with how our team overcame adversity and pulled through with the comeback. I feel like I was never worried about us losing because I knew that our best guys still needed to wrestle.” Said Colin, “I don’t feel like everybody on the team pulled their weight. We gave up too many pins, and that makes it difficult to beat good teams. Once we stop giving up pins we are going to be very hard to beat.”
All the wrestlers know that in the coming future events, they will be able to pull their weights and make sure every game they play will be done to the fullest. The wrestling team has many games before the end of the season, and they will be able to win and show the student body what they feel it means to be a shark.
