It was a busy week for the St. Louis girls’ varsity basketball team. They had their first game of the season Dec. 2, against Carrollton in which they took the lead the whole game and finished with a final score of 64-9.
The girls then played Vestaburg at home Dec. 3. It was a tough fight throughout the whole game, but the Sharks won with the final score being 42-34. The last game of the week for the girls’ basketball team was Dec. 5. The team traveled to Sanford-Meridian and fought really hard, but unfortunately took a tough loss with the final score being 23-71.
Junior Halle Hoyt said, “I think as a team, we did really good considering how small our team is. I think I did okay. I have some very big shoes to fill now that my sister is gone.” Hoyt also added, “The team has already improved a lot since the first game. We just need to keep working hard and we will be fine.”
Also, Sophomore, Courtney VanAlstine said, “I personally think I did pretty good for it being my first week on a varsity team. There are definitely things I can improve on like memorizing the plays better. I think for only having nine girls on the team we are doing pretty good.” She added, “We went up against a tough team, but we can’t get down over one game because they were a good team and we worked hard.” VanAlstine also added, “I think the team could improve as a whole by talking more in the game so we know who’s where and again just keep working on the plays.”
Senior Zoey Clarke said, “Honestly, the team has done tremendously better than I initially thought we would be doing, so that makes me really happy to see girls showing up still and putting in the work at practice.” Clarke then added, “Personally, going into this season, I know I had to really step up as a player and teammate since we lost one of our biggest scorers, Natalee Hoyt, but honestly I don’t think I am doing too bad. I definitely still have room for improvement.” She then said, “Although we are doing good this season, I would definitely like to see our defense improve more and have some girls know our plays better and get everyone on the same page.”
Overall, it sounds like the SLHS girls’ varsity basketball team had a good first week of games and are ready to improve and take on the rest of the season. Their next game is Dec. 10, home against Beaverton.
