Every morning students at St. Louis High School listen to the morning announcements, which detail everything from sports and club information to what is for lunch that day. Although students hear them daily, who are the people behind them and what do they think of the morning announcements?
Joy March, who first started as a para-pro at Carrie Knause has worked at St. Louis Schools for up to 12 years. She is now working in the high school office doing administrative work including doing the school announcements almost every morning. “I have been doing the morning announcements since I first began at TSN. Mrs. Peterson, who also worked in the TSN office, did not particularly like to do them and asked me to,” March shared about the beginning of her announcement experience. “The nice thing about the morning announcements is that I just have to read them. That combined with the fact that I’ve been doing it for so long, helps me not be nervous. I do get nervous occasionally when I have to make an on-the-fly announcement and don’t have time to plan what I’m going to say. I have definitely said some dumb things over the intercom,” March stated, “I think one of my first blunders was calling Mrs. Gurski, Mr. Gurski accidentally. I didn’t know the staff well and didn’t realize it was a female teacher,” she concluded.
Mrs. March is not the only one who has been granted the opportunity to do the school announcements, as multiple students have as well. “I wanted to capture the essence of what the student body should be,” Bethany Bowerman shared about her personal experience doing morning announcements. As a member of the student council and Rotary club, Bowerman has gained multiple experiences delivering them. “When I first did announcements, it was for Rotary pie in the face, and I was so excited I was given the opportunity to do them, because the previous students who did the announcements were so cool. I get nervous that I might not say the right words but then I remember that my SLHS family will forgive me if I stumble a little because at least I’m trying to hype everyone up. That’s all you can do is at least try,” Bowerman finalized.
