Christmas decorating and when it should start is a huge discussion that has recently began between students. While many think the day after Halloween is the time to start, others disagree and think it should be prolonged until after Thanksgiving.
During the Victorian period, Christmas trees were put up much later into December, specifically the day before Christmas. This was to symbolize the Eucharistic host, or the sign of redemption.
Today, traditional Christians believe Advent Sunday is the day Christmas decorations should go up. Advent Sunday is the fourth Sunday before Christmas. This year, it will take place Dec. 1. However, for most people, sometime between Halloween and Christmas is considered an appropriate time for decorating.
Yet Thanksgiving is in the middle and over time Thanksgiving has become celebrated less and less. This probably has something to do with the fact that what we were originally taught about Thanksgiving is now known to not be completely true.
However, that’s beside the point, the point is when should we decorate for Christmas? In my opinion, I think it’s good to get a headstart on decorations. That way when December rolls around, all you have to worry about are gifts. Of course, other’s opinions may differ.
For example, junior Breanna Adams stated, “I love Christmas decorations!” and, “I think an acceptable time to start decorating is after or around Thanksgiving.”
On the contrary, the article “Why Decorating Early for Christmas May Make You Happier” written by Amy Morin, talks about exactly what the title says, how decorating early could make one happier. She references this by claiming that, the earlier you decorate, the longer you get to experience the nostalgia that is Christmas time. Morin ends the article stating, “A little early Christmas spirit could be your secret ingredient to a happier, more connected winter season.” and who wouldn’t want to be happier this season?
