St. Louis High School’s Language Arts Club has begun again this year after a change from last year’s supervisor, Mrs. BG. Now supervised by Mr. Miller, the Club has worked hard to submit its first writing task by Wednesday, Sept. 15th, despite a minor scheduling mishap earlier this year.
Language arts club is a club dedicated to competing in competitive writing contests. The club meets with other regional schools to write in various genres and topics. Teams are informed of the genre or topic at the meeting, as advisors cannot tell their students. After the students are informed of the topic at the competition, they have two hours to brainstorm, draft, edit, and polish their writing. The writing pieces will then be submitted for anonymous judgment.
Club supervisor Mr. Miller heavily supports students in joining the language arts club, stating, “Language Arts is open to any student with a passion for writing. It’s an opportunity to stretch our abilities and collaborate with other writers.” He also further elaborated on the skills surrounding the language arts club, stating, “In terms of skills, writers will develop critical thinking, discipline, time management, and improved technique.”
Participant of the language arts club, Victoria Trevino, also shared her thoughts on why she joined the club, stating, “The reason I joined was the fact I get to compete and show off my skill in writing,” She continued by sharing some challenges that could be faced while participating, “The biggest challenges is that we don’t get the writing print until we get there so that adds a bit of stress to the factor.” In the end, she encouraged fellow students also to join, “I would most definitely recommend the LA club, it’s so much fun! You collaborate with others to make awesome writing pieces, compete against others, and see how different everyone writes.”
St. Louis’s language arts club is expected to compete in at least two more rounds of competition throughout the rest of this school year.
